Belstat is a straightforward counter and stats application from Belgium. The reports are for the most part clear, but there are areas where the actual value you are looking at is not apparent. The site is clean, fast, and well organized. There are advertisements on every page, but they are not too annoying. The stats were delayed a few hours during the day in Arizona, but only a few minutes during the evening, today anyway.

  1. Enter login, personal, and website information.
  2. Click the "Ok" button.
  3. Your info will be displayed for your aproval.
  4. Click the "Ok" button.
  5. Click the "counter code" link.
  6. Select the counter style.
  7. Click the "Ok" button.
  8. Copy and paste the code on your web pages.

The Summary Report contains all of the basic stats, including the number of days the site has been tracked by Belstat. For Last Day, Highest Day, Average per Month, Average per Week, Average per Day (of week), and Average per Hour there are totals for visitors and page views. There is also an Average Pages per Visitor stat. In addition to those summary stats, there is a "Prognosis" box that appears to be predicting the number of visitors to be expected on the site today. That might be useful on a site that gets predictable traffic but if you had predictable traffic you probably wouldn't need a prognosis.

The Days Report shows visitors and page views for the last 20 days as a table and a graph. Nice and simple. The bar graphs are not elegant, but they provide legible information.

The Visitors Report shows the last 50 visitors to your site. It includes IP address, Server, Date, Time, Language, and Referrer. Blocked IP addresses are shown, even though they don't affect the stats. The Server column contains the country and the ISP, company, or organization. For instance, in the case of an individual cable subscriber, the Server column might contain "US - cox communications inc", which is my ISP. The Referrer column is linked back to the referring page, if available. I suspect this is hits - not visitors. I visited the same page three times in 25 minutes, and it shows as three visitors here. The paid version keeps detail on the last 100 visitors.

The Week-Month Report shows the visitors and page views for the last 14 days and last 12 months. I mentioned that there are places where the report data becomes difficult to identify. This is one of those places. The per week report clearly shows the week number and the year. The per month report only shows the month. It is not clear if this is absolute data for that month in this year, or if it is averaged over all years.

The Hour-Weekday report is why the Week-Month Report is vague. It does not say so, but it seems apparent that this page is not showing daily or accumulated total data, but averaged data, since there is no time period mentioned. This type of report is generally useful, but not if you don't know what dates the report covers.

The Origin Report shows the top 15 search engines, keywords (phrases), and pages in three boxes. The Search Engines box shows total entries referred by each search engine. Clicking on a key phrase causes a Keywords Research box to replace the Pages box. In this box are the keywords, and a "Search" button, which causes the page to refresh with the search terms empty. Nothing else seems to happen. There is an ad linking to Keyword Discovery, a pay SEO service.

The Technical Report shows three boxes - Top 10 OS, Top 10 Screen Resolutions, and Top 10 Coulours. All stats on this page are in percent of total. Again, no indication what date range it might total, or if the percentage is of the top 10, or of all OS, and Screen stats.

The Other Report contains boxes for the Top 15 Browsers, Top 15 Countries, and Top 15 Domains. I hit the this site using

these browsers:

  • Firefox 3.0.1
  • Firefox 3.0.4
  • Safari 3.1
  • Opera 9.62
  • Google Chrome 0.3.154.9
  • Internet Explorer 7
  • Internet Explorer 8 Beta
  • Maxthon 2

Belstat shows hits from these browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 7.0
  • Internet Explorer 6.0
  • Opera 9.0
  • Mozilla 1.8
  • Firefox 1.5
  • Firefox 2.0
  • Google

There is also a difference between the update rate of the Visitors Report and this report. I hit this site four times, and within ten minutes the hits are all registered, but the browser box does not change. It is possible that there is a separate process for updating the browser/OS/screen information.

The Top 15 Domains are the referrers. There is a note under the box that says "Popularity last 2 months". It is in visits, which can't be correlated with any other stat in the reports, due to the two month range. There is one more report - the 1 Page Report, which is just all of the above on one page. Really handy for those of you who don't want to make staring at stats your only task for today. It is not too cluttered, because the UI design is so clean, but there is still a lot of information on it. There is a paid version (Pro) for 8 EUR/Month that has more capacity. It stores detail for 100 visitors, and summarized page and visit data eternally. If you don't want your stats to be visible to any clown browsing the web, you'll need to pay an additional fee to get a private account. Additional cost for additional bandwidth is very reasonable. Some stats packages rob you blind you if you go over the allocated hits. There is another nice feature on the Pro version - Group Counters. You make a Group Counter that consolidates reporting for several individual counters. That is a nice feature for the commercial web site builders who want to keep track of their sites, and those operating multiple sites that are managed by several individuals.

Belstat is a usable product with a very clean UI. The report servers are fast, although the processing is sometimes a little slow.
